ProVector™Bt : Mosquito-Transmitted Disease Control
There are approximately 3,000 mosquito species found globally. Mosquitoes are among the most efficient vectors of animal and human pathogens, causing many debilitating and often fatal diseases. Globally, malaria is the most prevalent vector-borne disease, with over 2.4 billion people around the world at risk of contracting this disease. Between 1 and 3 million deaths occur annually from malaria, most in children from sub-Saharan Africa. Every 30 seconds a person dies from malaria. Another vector-borne disease of particular concern to children's health is dengue virus, the second most important tropical disease with approximately 50 to 100 million cases of dengue fever and 500,000 cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) each year. DHF is fatal to approximately 40% of children that contract this painful and deadly virus. Yellow fever, Chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis, and filariasis, are regionally important vector-borne diseases that are particularly dangerous for children.
A technological leap forward in mankind's fight against mosquitoes, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases is the development the patented new formulation of Bacillus thurengiensis israeliensis (Bt) incorporated into a system that delivers pesticides directly to adult mosquitoes. The ProVector™Bt (Patent Pending) was developed by Dr. Tom Kollars at MEVLABS, Inc. to be an economical and environmentally safe "GREEN" device for killing adult mosquitoes. The ProVector™Bt is the first device capable of killing adult mosquitoes with Bt biopesticide; which is virtually non-toxic according to the EPA. Because the ProVector™Bt is targeted towards adult mosquitoes by luring them to feed on the formulation, it is approximately 8,000 times more cost effective than aerial sprayed pesticides such as malathion and does not have harmful environmental effects on non-target species. While bed nets effectively protect one person at a time while they are sleeping; the ProVector™Bt helps the entire household (average of 7 people) 24 hours a day. We recommend the ProVector™Bt be used in combination with bed nets and other integrated pest management strategies to provide maximum protection to individuals and families at risk of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.
ProVector™Bt imitates the look, smell and taste of flowers in order to trick the adult mosquitoes into ingesting the new Bt formulation.
Unlike any other commercially available device, the ProVector™Bt uses olfactory and gustatory chemical attractants to attract and kill both female and male mosquitoes. The wavelengths of the colors are optimized to attract different species of mosquitoes that transmit malaria, dengue virus and other diseases. The center of the flower contains a fine mesh which allows only mosquitoes to feed through, therefore blocking non-target species from eating the bait. The attractant is about 10x more effective in attracting female mosquitoes and 100x more attractive to male mosquitoes than carbon dioxide traps. One refill disc lasts six months and will kill approximately 10,000 mosquitoes. The ProVector™Bt is used indoors to effectively reduce mosquito populations.
